1.Our mission
Our mission is simple: to make vehicle ownership and purchasing safer, more transparent, and completely accessible for every driver in the United Kingdom.
We believe that access to official vehicle history should never be hidden behind a paywall. The DVSA collects this data as a public service, and we are committed to presenting it in the clearest, most user-friendly way possible — completely free of charge, with no registration required.
Every year, millions of used vehicles change hands in the UK. Hidden problems like outstanding defects, clocked mileage, or recurring advisory notices can cost buyers thousands of pounds. By making MOT history instantly accessible on any device, we empower drivers, buyers, and sellers with the information they need to make confident, informed decisions.
2.How we started
Motadvisor was founded in 2026 by a small team of automotive enthusiasts and software engineers who shared a frustration with the existing vehicle checking landscape. At the time, accessing basic MOT history often meant navigating confusing government websites or paying for reports from commercial providers that wrapped free data in expensive packages.
We asked a simple question: why shouldn't every driver be able to check a vehicle's full MOT history in seconds, for free, from any device?
What began as a weekend project quickly grew into something much bigger. Within months of launch, thousands of people were using Motadvisor every day to check vehicles before buying, monitor their own car's MOT status, and investigate potential issues flagged in previous tests.
Today, Motadvisor serves millions of checks each year and has become one of the most trusted independent sources of MOT data in the UK. We remain a small, focused team committed to our original principle: free access to public vehicle data, presented clearly and honestly.

Using Motadvisor is designed to be as simple and fast as possible. There are no accounts to create, no forms to fill out beyond the registration number, and no waiting periods. Here is what happens when you use our checker:
- You enter a UK vehicle registration number (number plate) into the search box on our homepage.
- Our system securely transmits that registration to the official DVSA MOT history API in real time.
- The DVSA database returns the complete MOT test history for that vehicle, including dates, results, mileage readings, advisory notices, and defect information.
- We format and display this data in a clean, readable layout that highlights key information such as the current MOT expiry date, pass/fail history, and any mileage anomalies.
- Our optional AI analysis engine reviews advisory items and provides estimated repair cost ranges to help you budget for potential future work.
The entire process typically takes less than two seconds from search to results. No personal data is stored, and vehicle registration numbers are not logged after your session ends.
Back to table of contents4.Our data source and accuracy
All MOT history data displayed on Motadvisor is sourced directly from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) via their official public API. The DVSA is the government agency responsible for setting MOT testing standards, approving test centres, and maintaining the central database of all MOT test results in the United Kingdom.
We do not modify, filter, or alter the vehicle data returned by the DVSA. What you see on Motadvisor is exactly what is held in the official government database at the time of your search. If you believe any MOT record shown on our site is incorrect, this means the discrepancy exists within the DVSA database itself. You can find guidance on appealing MOT results in our FAQ section or on GOV.UK.
In addition to MOT history, we also provide:
- Vehicle tax status: Retrieved from DVLA records, showing whether the vehicle is currently taxed and when that tax is due to expire.
- Mileage records: The odometer reading recorded by the tester at each MOT test. We flag any unusual patterns that may indicate odometer tampering.
- AI repair estimates: These are generated by our own machine learning models trained on millions of anonymised repair invoices from UK garages. They provide indicative cost ranges only and should not be treated as formal quotations.
5.Why we are free
Motadvisor is and will always remain free to use. We have no plans to introduce subscription fees, pay-per-check charges, or mandatory account registration. This commitment is central to our identity and our mission.
You might reasonably wonder how we sustain the service if we do not charge users. The answer is straightforward: Google Adsense advertising.
- No data selling: We do not collect, package, or sell user data, search histories, or vehicle registration logs to any third party. Privacy is a core commitment, as detailed in our privacy policy.
- Operational efficiency: Our technology stack is designed to be lightweight and cost-effective. By serving static pages where possible and caching DVSA responses responsibly, we keep our infrastructure costs low.
- Optional premium tools (future): At some point in the future, we may introduce optional premium features such as detailed vehicle valuation reports, extended history beyond MOT data, or fleet management dashboards for businesses. The core MOT history check will always remain free.
Our philosophy is that access to government-held vehicle data is a public good, and charging for basic access to that data would be contrary to the principles of open government and transparency.
Back to table of contents6.Our team
Motadvisor is built and maintained by a small, dedicated team based in the United Kingdom. We come from backgrounds in software engineering, data science, automotive journalism, and user experience design. What unites us is a shared belief that technology should serve people, not complicate their lives.
Our team structure:
- Engineering: Three full-stack developers who build and maintain the website, manage the DVSA API integration, and ensure the platform remains fast, secure, and reliable.
- Data and AI: Two data scientists responsible for our mileage anomaly detection systems, advisory item classification, and AI-powered repair cost estimation models.
- Content and compliance: A content team that researches and writes our guides, maintains accuracy across all published information, and ensures compliance with UK regulations including GDPR and accessibility standards.
- Support: A customer support function that handles user enquiries, data accuracy reports, and feedback — typically responding within one working day.
We are not a large corporation. We are a focused, independent team who care deeply about the quality and integrity of the service we provide. When you contact Motadvisor, you are speaking directly with someone who works on the product.
Back to table of contents7.Our values and commitments
Everything we do at Motadvisor is guided by a clear set of values that shape our decisions, our product, and our relationship with users:
Transparency
We are open about where our data comes from, how our service works, and what our limitations are. We will never exaggerate our capabilities or hide information behind confusing language. Our terms and conditions are written in plain English, not legal jargon.
Privacy
We collect the absolute minimum amount of data required to operate the service. We do not track users across the web, we do not build advertising profiles, and we do not sell or share personal data. Our privacy policy explains exactly what we collect and why.
Accessibility
We are committed to making Motadvisor usable by everyone, regardless of ability or technology. We follow WCAG 2.2 Level AA guidelines and regularly test our site with assistive technologies. Read our full accessibility statement for details of our ongoing work in this area.
Accuracy and honesty
If we make a mistake, we correct it. If our data is out of date, we explain why. If we cannot answer a question, we will point you to someone who can. We believe that trust is earned through consistent honesty over time.
Independence
Motadvisor is independently owned and operated. We are not part of any larger corporate group, we do not have external investors pressuring us to monetise aggressively, and we do not accept payment in exchange for featuring or promoting any garage, dealership, or service provider.
Back to table of contents8.What we cover
The Motadvisor MOT history checker covers all vehicles registered in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland that have undergone at least one MOT test since digital records began in 2005. This includes:
- Cars and passenger vehicles
- Vans and light commercial vehicles (up to 3,500 kg gross vehicle weight)
- Motorcycles and mopeds
- Motorhomes and campervans
- Private hire and taxi vehicles (subject to local licensing requirements)
- Classic and historic vehicles (where MOT records exist)
Our service does not currently cover:
- Heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and large commercial vehicles, which are tested under a separate regime
- Buses and coaches, which are subject to different testing requirements
- Vehicles registered outside the United Kingdom
- Vehicles that have never undergone an MOT test (such as brand-new cars less than three years old or vehicles that have been on SORN since before their first test was due)
We are continually working to expand our coverage and add new data sources where reliable official APIs are available.
